Things to do in the English Riviera

Stunning Torquay, Paignton and Brixham

The Weary Ploughman Inn, near Brixham, is located on the A3022 main road running between Paignton and Brixham, next to Churston Railway Station. This station is run by the local Steam Railway company and the trains run between Paignton and Kingswear on the River Dart, as a tourist attraction, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the Spring/Summer and school holidays.

At Churston station you can catch the train down to Kingswear and then take the passenger ferry across to picturesque Dartmouth or you could buy a “Round Robin” ticket which includes the train down to Kingswear, a boat ride up to Totnes, a bus ride from Totnes to Paignton (the bus station is opposite the railway station) and then catch the steam train up from Paignton to Churston.

If you would rather take your car across the river to Dartmouth and beyond to Kingsbridge, Star Cross, Salcome, Thurlescombe etc. etc., you can drive down from The Weary Ploughman Inn to either the Higher Ferry or into Kingswear to the Lower Ferry.

The area around The Weary Ploughman Inn is rural with local beaches and coves within easy reach. The large main beaches of Broadsands (our local beach), Goodrington, Paignton and Torquay are safe sandy beaches and have been awarded the Blue Flag for water quality.

The fishing port of Brixham is approximately 5 minutes’ drive away but, as parking can be difficult in the high season, there is a car park for the ‘Park & Ride’ service into Brixham just along the road from The Weary Ploughman Inn.

Churston Golf Club is a few minutes’ walk away, across the main road, through an under-pass.

The coastal footpath from Brixham to Torquay is a safe interesting walk for those who enjoying this pastime.

“Greenway” which was Agatha Christie’s holiday home on the banks of the River Dart is now run by The National Trust and is open to the public during the Spring and Summer. “Greenway” is about 2 miles from The Weary Ploughman Inn.

A little further afield is Oldway Mansion, situated between Paignton and Torquay. This was built by Paris Singer of the Singer Sewing Machine Company and is a beautiful building on the lines of the Palace of Verseilles – but obviously much smaller!
